Barkby Tower – Flat 9

Zaynab is an engineering student who is currently involved in a post-doctoral study into air pollution supported by Department of the Environment.  She has been supported by a scholarship and having lived in a number of countries most recently in Germany where she completed her PHD.

After attending a conference together Zaynab and one of the researchers on the project started a sexual relationship. Solomon is from Ghana and they both have student visas.  Zaynab is very distressed to realise she was pregnant and by the time she arranged to meet her midwife she was already 13 weeks pregnant. She cannot contemplate a termination of pregnancy but feels she has no one to discuss her situation with and is incredibly worried about her future.

Where could Zaynab have found help with her decisions about the choices available to her if she had not felt ready to keep her baby

  • What rights and benefits may Zaynab be entitled to at present and if she has to give up her studies?

Using a PISCES model think of one thing that may affect each of the following in relation to Zaynab’s wellbeing:

PHYSICAL

INTELLECTUAL

SOCIAL

CULTURAL

EMOTIONAL

SPIRITUAL

  • Using the latest NICE Guidelines identify what are the key things the midwife needs to ask when Zaynab “books” with you as her community midwife

  • What are some of the issues when a woman “books” when she does not know much about the father’s medical history as in this case?

  • What other multi-disciplinary agencies could the community midwife encourage Zaynab to contact to support them once she has her baby?
